"This Woman's Work" - Maxwell
A hopeful, new Counselor walked into my office today for a second chance. He looked like he had a lot on his mind; on his plate and he seemed nervous just walking in. I asked him if he needed more time to think things through to prepare for his evaluation, but he didn't respond right away. He seemed distant. I asked him if it was personal and he simply nodded his head, "Yes."
It was hard for him to make eye contact at first, but finally he sat up and placed his hands on his knees. "My wife is in the E.R.," he said without blinking. He looked away again. I sat across from him, careful not to invade his space.
"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked softly. He shook his head, "No." I knew whatever it was, he was tired of talking about it. He just wanted to get this over with and fast, but I gave him a minute. He needed a minute.
He said he was ready and with that, we moved forward. He completed the necessary steps in less than 30-minutes, but I knew it wasn't about getting all the answers right. How could anything be right in here when so many things aren't going so right out there?
I checked in again, but again he politely nodded his head, "No." We went out to the patio chairs. The wind kicked up a notch and it got a little chilly, but we sat for a bit and let the breeze pass us by. I knew he needed something; some words of comfort; some barrings...but I didn't want to come off sounding like a Hallmark card. So, I did what I do best. I just talked to him in hopes that he'll talk it out. He talked, but he kept it professional. He didn't allow himself to let go. I couldn't blame him for this. I couldn't just pass him because of this either.
Part of what I do as a Trainer is to reach out to people the best way I know how; to help them understand how to communicate something so complex into a few, simple words. A Counselor's role isn't any different; however there is this sense of control on just how much they reach out. It's limited to ensure that it doesn't become about them. It's necessary so the focus remains on the person in front of them. He did this well. He never lost his focus on me and my efforts. He simply smiled.
We kept our conversation brief. Overall, he passed. Not because it was a battle of wits. Not because he was able to withhold his feelings. He passed because he was able to show his Trainer his valuable skill as a Counselor...as a human being...to never lose sight of the person in front of him. And to never lose sight of the person waiting for him in the E.R.
Lyrics:
(ahh-hah-hoowoo)
(ahh-hah-oo-hoowoo)
(ahh-hah-oo-hoowoo)
Pray God you can cope
I stand outside
This woman's work
This woman's world
Oh it's hard on the man
Now his part is over
Now starts the craft of the father
I know you've got a little life in you left
I know you've got a lotta strength left
I know you've got a little life in you left
I know you've got a lotta strength left
I should be cryin' but I just can't let it show
I should be hopin' but I can't stop thinkin'
All the things we should've said that are never said
All the things we should've done that we never did
All the things we should've given, but I didn't
Oh darlin', make it go
Make it go away
Give me these moments
Give them back to me
Give me your little kiss
Give me your...
(I know you've got a little life in you left)
Give me your hand baby
(I know you've got a lotta strength)
Give me your pretty hand
(I know you've got a little life in you left)
For...
(I know you've got a lotta strength left)
Your lovechild
(I know you've got a little life in you left)
Whatever you need
(I know you've got a lotta strength left)
Give me your hand
(I know you've got a little life in you left)
Give me your love
(I know you've got a lotta strength left)
I should be cryin' but I just can't let it show baby
I should be hopin' but I can't stop thinkin
All the things we should've said that we never said
All the things we should've done that we never do
All the things that you wanted from me
All the things that you needed from me
All the things we should've given, but I didn't
Oh darlin', make it go away now.
Just make it go away.
