"Butterfly Fly Away" - Miley Cyrus
It's been 2-years now since my grandmother passed away and still, I really haven't accepted the fact that she's gone. I keep thinking she's just "away."
I was spending a relaxing day with a good friend of mine and we decided to rent a movie we knew our men would NEVER watch and so low and behold we chose, Hannah Montana: The Movie! Cheesy, yes. Predictable, yes. Definitely not my type of movie, but we figured let's make this fun as if we were 12 again and having a slumber party. So she pops in the DVD and we sprawl out lazily on her couch and watch.
To my surprise, I actually enjoyed it (even through the silliest of silly moments). I took it for what it was and felt young again. No expectations, just simply allowing myself to unwind and have a good time. As the movie went on, there was a touching scene between Miley and her dad, Billy Rae. She was under a gazebo just after it had rained, strumming her guitar. She had just written a song dedicated to him and so they decided to sing it together. This was the song.
It reminded me of my dad and all that he has done and is doing for me. And then it reminded of my Mama (his mom) and all that she had done for all of us. I felt that it was more fitting for her since she is my "butterfly flying away." I sing this to her...
Love you, Mama.
Lyrics:
You tucked me in, turned out the light
Kept me safe and sound at night
Little girls depend on things like that
Brushed my teeth and combed my hair
Had to drive me everywhere
You were always there when I looked back
You had to do it all alone
Make a living, make a home
Must have been as hard as it could be
And when I couldn't sleep at night
Scared things wouldn't turn out right
You would hold my hand and sing to me
Caterpillar in the tree
How you wonder who you'll be
Can't go far but you can always dream
Wish you may and wish you might
Don't you worry, hold on tight
I promise you there will come a day
Butterfly fly away
Butterfly fly away, butterfly fly away
Flap your wings now you can't stay
Take those dreams and make them all come true
Butterfly fly away, butterfly fly away
We've been waiting for this day
All along and knowing just what to do
Butterfly, butterfly, butterfly, butterfly fly away
Butterfly fly away
Butterfly fly away
